Fired Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was hired by Wade
Phillips on Thursday to coach the defensive line of the Dallas Cowboys.
Coaching the defensive front in a 3-4 system was Grantham's specialty
with the Houston Texans before he joined the Browns in 2005. It was a
major reason Grantham was attractive to the Browns as a coordinator
after Eric Mangini turned down their offer following the 2004 season.
But after three seasons of diminishing returns, Grantham was fired by
coach Romeo Crennel and replaced by secondary coach Mel Tucker.
Grantham's dismissal was surprising because he received a two-year
contract extension six months earlier. The move was viewed as Crennel's
decision alone. Team sources cited "communication problems" between
Grantham, players and other members of the coaching staff, and said
Crennel had become uncomfortable with him.
In Dallas, Grantham replaces Kacy Rodgers, one of three coaches who left
the Cowboys to join new coach Tony Sparano's staff in Miami.
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips told DallasCowboys.com: "Todd is an
outstanding person and coach. His familiarity with many of the things we
do up front was important, but his experience as a coordinator is what
elevated him in our eyes.
"He knows and understands how one position group on the defense affects
everything else that goes on in the scheme. You can only gain that type
of knowledge of the big picture by actually creating a game plan and
coordinating a defense, and I think it's a huge plus."
