In one of my most important leagues (read: big $$$), I've been winning
despite playing Frank Gore (about 1/2 the time) and Steve Smith
(nearly every week). Because my team is very solid at the other
positions, I could afford to play these two slackers, waiting and
waiting for a big time breakout game from them. In the games where
they've played well, I've been able to collect the high score of the
week.

That's great, but now it's playoff season, and every game is life or
death. With that in mind, I'm up against possibly the top team in the
league (LT, TO, Housh, Palmer) this week. Unless several of my guys
play above their heads, I'm probably dead in the water. My decisions
are:

Pick one:
Gore vs. MIN
Kolby Smith @ DEN

Pick one:
Steve Smith @ JAC
Marshall vs. KC
R.White vs. NO

Can I really justify benching Gore AND Smith in the same week? The
matchups seem to say yes, but I fear one or both of them somehow find
a way to throw up a big number (and I miss it).

....and you would go with???

Thanks,

Minnesota not only has one of the toughest run defenses but they have
been killing teams in recent weeks. SF is bound to fall behind and
abandon the run early. Combine that with the fact that Kolby Smith
has been running well and faces one of the poorest run defenses and I
think that you have to go with Kolby at RB.

For receiver, I'm going to say Roddy White. He had an unbelievable 19
passes thrown his way last week. This week he faces Jason David who
gets burnt on a weekly basis. Steve Smith is really my THIRD choice
here. He's still great, but he can't throw the ball to himself.

I agree this week with Smith over Gore, as I won't be at the game, so
Gore won't go off...lol.

WR, I just can't advise anyone to use Roddy White, no matter the
matchup, I'd stick with Smith.

I agree the choices are Kolby Smith and Roddy White.

FWIW, my full rankings for the week are here: http://www.fantasyfootballviews.com/
K Smith and R White rank pretty far ahead of your other choices,
mainly due to matchups.

No. With Atlanta going to teh scrap heap for a QB, you cannot look at
me and attempt justifying playinf RWhite. So you are stuck with an
average SSmith (if Teste is playing, it should be OK). Gore, otoh, is
playing a VERY tough run D, and though I am forced to use him in one
league (MoMo is now worth-less), YOU are NOT. YOu gotta bench Gore if
you have a viable alternative, and you DO, imho, in Kolby. Play
SSMith and Kolby, and pray for rain....or I mean GL.
