Seeking revenge for last years drubbing, the good folks at Hippie U
plan to pull out all the stops against Hillbillies of Tennesee.

Pregame festivities include a cannonball fest featuring zoom tube hits
of Humboldt County Red followed by bota bag guzzles of Sangria punch.
The Cal cheerleaders wearing the traditional tiedyed headbands will
hold aloft the world's largest bead curtain (verified by the GBWR)
for the Golden Bears to run through. Exposing their fashionably
unshaven armpits, the Cal cheer squad hopes to taunt the Hillbillies
with the ever present odor of pachouli and burning hemp.

Meanwhile the Hillbillies, many of whom will have just taken their
first ever airplane ride, will be disoriented by the piped in music in
the Cal visitors locker room which will feature a looping tape of
Strawberry Alarm Clock, Vanilla Fudge, The Grateful Dead and Canned
Heat. They will be further dismayed to discover that the shine in
their team jugs has been replaced by the Hippies training staff with a
macrobiotic soy juice flavored with blue-green algae. Their
traditional pre-game meal of possum and fatback will be replaced with
whole grain pitas with tahini and sprouts, with choice of halva or
brownies for dessert.

Final score: Cal 35, Tennessee 24.

You are selling California short.
Tennessee is inexperienced at receiver, secondary, and defensive line;
injured at QB, punter, and tight end.
Tennessee will be running while California is passing.

California 49
Tennessee 14

We are in for a long year.
I wonder if Coach Pearl has ever coached any football.

What kind of dumb AD would install a basketball coach as the head coach
of the football team?

Anyway, Tennessee did okay, I thought. Tennessee is a little overrated,
Cal is a little underrated; both are fun to watch.

Both are overrated; Tennessee is bad on both sides of the ball; Cal on
defense.
I think you will find when Tennessee plays in the SEC, they will
average about 17 points per game.
I have doubts that Tennessee will beat Southern Mississippi next week.

Ahh, the week 1 pessimistos show up to the party.

Tennessee will do just fine, they might even beat Florida if they get
healed up in a couple weeks. For an opening game, both teams played
great, but the main difference was Cal's speed on offense--the punt
return and a couple rushes told the tale.

I'm actually more optimistic about the defense than before. Cal's
offense is pretty damb good....we won't see better rushers or
receivers and the qb is as good as anyone. The line isn't as good as
the skill positions, but they're not bad.
Offensively, we need to get better...the receivers will and
hopefully everyone will get more comfortable the no huddle.
Coverage teams still need work....but that one punt return was a
thing of beauty. Also, you'd think on a campus of 20K, we could find
someone who could kick off better.

Why not? What conference does Tennessee play in?

I'm certain they won't see a better punt return this season.

Dewd... Urban is giving serious consideration to having Percy Harvin return
kickoffs and punts.

If'n I was you, I'd be frightened and confused.
