Ross agrees to buy 50 percent of Dolphins, stadium
Associated Press
DAVIE, Fla. -- New York builder Stephen Ross has agreed to purchase 50
percent of the Miami Dolphins from owner Wayne Huizenga, with an
opportunity to become managing general partner in the future.
Ross would acquire 50 percent of the franchise, Dolphin Stadium and
surrounding developable land, the team said in a release. The sale
requires approval from the NFL.

Wow, I sure didn't see this one coming. Did any of you? I figured
after Wayne hired Parcells everything was set. I wonder what he
(Parcells) thinks about this. At least we know who our future owner
will probably be.

Stephen Ross To Become A 50% Partner Of Dolphins, Stadium
February 22, 2008
Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga announced today that Stephen M.
Ross of New York and Palm Beach has become a 50% partner in the
franchise, the stadium and the surrounding developable land. Mr. Ross
is Chairman of the Related Companies, an international real estate
development company.
Mr. Huizenga will remain the Managing General Partner of the
franchise, while Mr. Ross will be an active partner and has the
opportunity to become the Managing General Partner in the future.
Mr. Huizenga commented, “I have always said that I wanted to bring in
a partner, and I can’t think of anyone more appropriate than Steve. He
has unbridled enthusiasm and I couldn’t feel better about the future
than I do with Steve as my partner and Bill Parcells running football
operations.”
Mr. Ross added, “Having grown up in South Florida, Dolphins football
has been a lifetime passion for me. I am energized by this opportunity
and look forward to being able to once again watch the Dolphins win a
Super Bowl alongside all the other loyal Dolphin fans.”
The transaction requires the approval of the National Football League.

My guess is that Wayne was looking to sell 100%, but he promised Tuna
that he would not sell as part of their deal - that basically says to me
that Wayne has retained control and things will stay that way until Bill
moves on or is comfy with Ross.
In any case, I doubt this deal was "sprung" on Parcells. That would be
poor sportsmanship by Wayne - not a trait I've noticed.

No, I'm sure Parcells was surprised. The story was hidden on super
secret web sites that only I know about. Parcells isn't cleared for
these sites and has to fumble around with far less information than I
get. For example, don't tell anyone about this site:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3155443
Note the Dec. 15 date. This was before Parcells got hired but since it
was hidden from public view on this obscure and highly protected website
I'm sure Parcells didn't know Huizenga was looking for a buyer when he
took the job.
Since I trust you, I'll tell you about another of my hush, hush super
secret sites that you normally need an NSA security clearance to get into:
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=319032
Yeah, they knew about it too.
These are some hard core sites that the government doesn't want you to
know about. There's been a lot of discussion about "spy cameras" on
these sites lately. So I'd appreciate it if you'd keep it quiet and not
let anyone else know about them. |

Well, I guess I'm the only one "surprised" by this. When Wayne hired
Parells & Co. all the selling (or looking for a partner) stories
disappeared from my view so I assumed that was that. Oh well,
whatever. I did a little reading on this Stephen Ross guy last night
and he seems like a pretty standup kinda guy. So IMO the sooner he
becomes the Managing General Partner the better.
Bobby M
Btw maybe Parcells, like Herm Edwards, doesn't use the internet. -

I didn't. What I've seen puts the price tag on this transaction at $550
million dollars. To me, that's a lot of money. I can't imagine anyone
buying or selling something that expensive on a whim. There's a lot of
thought and negotiation that's gone into this, I'm sure.
Euph's probably on to something about Huizenga getting his estate in order. |

I was absolutely surprised by this news - in the sense that I thought
this had been "put to bed" by the Tuna hire. When the story about Wayne
selling the team first broke, I thought Wayne was just sick of the
downward spiral of the team and of being seen as incapable of fixing the
franchise's problems. He does have a cut and run style - we saw that
with the Marlins - and he has always bought and sold his businesses.
The stuff about him getting rid of the team for estate purposes was
suggested by the sportswriters and, insofar as I know, is just their
speculation with no confirmation of this coming from Huizenga. However,
it is very likely that at the time of his death, the team would have to
be sold to pay the death tax. That's why the Robbies sold the Dolphins
when old Joe died.

Actually, in the PC, Huizenga did mention estate as part of the reason,
and the fact that he's getting older also had a part. |

Well, it is a reality for these billionaires. The death taxes will make
juice out of their oranges.
