and end the rampant breaking of league rules by other teams?

From: http://www.draftdaddy.com/blog/nfldraft.cfm

"We've been told Cleveland is close to having the parameters of deal
done with Patriots free agent cornerback Asante Samuel....They have no
first rounder, so they look at him as their first rounder and will pay
up handsomely to reunite him with Romeo Crennel."

Well, well. Teams aren't allowed to negotiate with free agents until
February 29...that's a league rule. The Browns (who I like) are
breaking the rules in order to gain an advantage over other teams in
an effort to improve their team.

Isn't that "cheating"? I believe this kind of thing is rampant
(tampering like this), but why isn't the commissioner (or Arlen
Specter, for that matter) investigating the systematic breaking of the
rules by teams, or at least why isn't Specter going after the NFL for
not investigating these charges properly?

(every time something like this comes out and the league does nothing
about it, it further shows the hypocrisy of it all)

John
PS - Good for Romeo...Samuel will help them, and at least he isn't
going to the Jets!

Then that pretty much rules out....well, everybody. Have fun watching
college football then.

What petition?

You know, at some point you need to consider either (a) adding
something constructive to the conversation, or (b) getting a life.
Maybe both.

You believe this kind of thing is rampant? Based on what? The articles you
read on rumor sites?

Anyway, the league is already investigating the 49'ers for tampering last
year, so yes, they do consider it cheating. It's hard to say how widespread
it is, regardless of what your rumor mills say. There is nothing stopping
an agent (or another team, for that matter) from starting a rumor that
contract negotiations are taking place, whether they are or not. Not to
mention several websites I can think of who like to make stuff up to get
hits.

You want to get hits? Make up a rumor about the Patriots cheating. That's
how you get hits.

But I think John's point is, there is as exactly as much validity to
this story as to the "Patriots Taped the Rams" story, and yet the
response is so very different...

John, this is tongue & cheek, right?

Your own article says this:

< deal to sign Patriots free agent cornerback Asante Samuel....They have
no first rounder, so they can look at him as their first rounder and
will pay up handsomely to reunite him with Romeo Crennel.>>

It reads "could meet" the parameters. I believe a lot of tampering
goes on but it does not mean it is going on here.

Mostly, yes. Thanks for noticing.

Agreed. My point is simply this. Seemingly every rumor about the
Patriots gets front-page news these days if it even hints at
impropriety. Breaking a league rule is breaking a league rule, no
matter how you slice it. My question is this: why doesn't the league
come down hard on tampering in the free agent market? Why don't they
investigate every rumor of tampering hard?

And, in the bizarro world we now live in, why doesn't Arlen Specter
get involved? Suppose you're right, that tampering goes on all the
time. Isn't that an NFL scandal, that the league is somehow filled
with rule-breaking GM's and coaches, trying to get around the rules in
order to gain a competitive edge? If that's so, why wouldn't someone
like Specter go hard after that?

Do you see the point? So yeah, mostly tongue-in-cheek, but I'm trying
to demonstrate the inconsistencies and the lunacy we've seen over the
past 6 months.

John my initial reaction to spygate was if you ain't cheatin' you
ain't tryin'

As I looked at it more & more, the league warnings, it had a taint of
sleaze that is worrisome. JV, I am also honest enough to know I can't
fully separate my "hatred" for all things Pats.

No where in that statement does it say the are negotiating, or even
speaking to Samuel. Samuel has made public what he wants in his next
deal, and all that the above statement says is that the Browns might be
able to come up with something close. As long as they haven't spoken to
him, they have done nothing wrong. To compare this to what BB has down
is crazy.

Thats even if you can believe that the site was told anything.

Crennel is a good guy and not a backstabber like Mangini. There is no
way Belichick was going to raise an issue with the league even if all
of this were true. The Pats gambled on Asante by not giving him the
guaranteed 10 million he was asking for and now they are going to pay
the price

Hey John...when you CHEAT on the field DURING A GAME(and against an
inferior opponet) the league is going to take a much harder look at
the incident. Becuase of the patriots*, and fans like yourself to a
lesser extent, the game itself is now being questioned. Because of the
pats*, people are now questioning how tainted the game is.While the
pats* organization should be ashamed of themselves, fans like you must
realize: because of spygate, and cameragate, and walshgate, and
bellicheatgate...this is what there legacy will be.....congrats my
friend. now please stop ruining the game i love. fans who like
dishonest play, and flat out cheats will find welcoming arms in the wwf
