First glance, I didn't think there was a team with two first round
picks... but I was wrong. There is one... The Dallas Cowboys. They
own picks #22 and #28
How ironic that half of their coaching staff is now in Miami!
Based on the old Draft Pick Value Chart:
#1 = 3000 points
#22 = 780
#28 = 660
In theory, the Dolphins should be able to buy both of those picks and
have about 1500 "points" left to maybe work a trade (surely Sparano
knows of a stud player or two hiding on the Cowboy's roster?) or acquire
their 1st rounder in pick in 2009? The Cowboys are a team that truly
is "one player away" from a Super Bowl. They might reach for a guy like
Dorsey or Long.
The only other team I can see reaching might be the Pats - looking to
improve on defense or in their running game. In theory, their #7 pick
is worth 1500 points. I don't know where the rest of the trade would
come from. Maybe we could get Welker back?

That's not worth it, even if they were to chip in next year's first
rounder -- which would most likely also fall somewhere in the mid- to

I understand that the "value chart" says it's not equitable. That's
the way it is. Every analysis out there and most objective observers
are in agreement that Tuna wants to parlay that #1 pick into multiple
decent picks., The team is a mess and there's no "special player" in
the mix that demands they use that #1 pick on him.
If Tuna wants to deal, there are not any great options: It's a buyers
market for any team that wants to move up. Based on what I can see,
there is only one team in a position to make that happen - and that's
Dallas. Yes... #22, #28 and the twenty-to-thirty something pick that
would come from the suggested deal, falls way short of 3000 points.
IF, after losing a chunk of their coaching staff, the Cowboys went
belly up in '08, that deal could actually swing into Miami's favor.
So, the deal is reasonable from a negotiating standpoint.
From a needs and relationship standpoint, the Dolphins are looking at
a draft that is said to be rich in solid defensive talent, sans any
spectacular players, and you can be sure that the current Dolphins
staff has all the necessary cell phone numbers to speak directly to
the people in Dallas that would need to buy in to the plan. If Tuna
offered Jones a way to grab the spotlight, with the #1 pick at what
could be a bargain-basement price, I'm sure Jerry would seriously
think it over.
I think it's a defensible scenario - even if it seems to favor
Dallas. It all comes down to how badly Miami wants out from under
that #1 pick.
Maybe Tuna is just bluffing. Maybe they intend to use it on a
player. If so, they better have the guy they want signed to a deal
before draft day - otherwise I will lose all respect for His Majesty.

From what I've read. Jerry Jones covets McFadden (makes sense, as an
Arkansas alum), and may be willing to jump up to #1 to get him. The trade I
heard, and this was pure speculation, was their two first rounders and
Marion Barber for the Dolphins #1 overall. I'd do that in a heartbeat, if
it was ever really on the table. Barber is one tough SOB, and would be
great insurance in case Brown doesn't come back 100%. And if he did,
imagine the hurting those two could put on a defense.
I can't see the Patriots ever going for a trade up to #1. They wouldn't
want to take on the exhorbitant contract, they're too smart about how they
utilize their salary cap. Besides, how much upgrading do they really need?
Some young linebackers to groom, a cornerback in case Samuel leaves, and
that's pretty much it. Anything else is just a bonus. |

The draft is supposedly rich in the exact players the Pats need - they
probably would consider trading down... I've read that defense is likely
to be their focus... are they unhappy with Maroney?
I deeply appreciate your posting that rumor info... makes me feel like
I'm not totally nuts for suggesting something could get done. I see it
as the only plausible scenario on the board... some kind of deal with
Dallas. Exactly what deal might be proposed, if any, I don't know...
but RB is the one position that we actually have a little comfort (a
teeny bit). Maybe there could be a 3rd party involved that was hot on
Barber for a late 1st rounder? Me not know... me just guessing.
