You'd have to be a real old-timer like me to remember Oliver's Woofing
Theorem, but it provides the best explanation as to why New England
lost tonight....

Oliver's Woofing Theorem states, in a nutshell, that in any given
athletic competition (team, individual, amatuer, professional), the
team/player who is the most over-hyped/over-praised by his/her/its
fans/supporters is doomed to LOSE the competition.

One word in my opinion: hubris. That was the Pats' Achilles Heel.

The Patriots lost the game for one simple reason...their defense could
not stop the Giants when they had to. Period. They were ahead. They
were winning. They needed to stop the Giants, and couldn't . End of
story.

There was that shot of Bruschi hugging Seau when Moss scored the TD
inside of 3 minutes left.
He appeared to be telling him they were a 3 and out away from immortality.
Oops.
BTW - for the benefit of Beiselbub, I forgot the fll text of Brady's
quote of the week: "So, we're only gonna score 17 points, huh? ha ha ha
.... does Plaxico play defense?"
No, Tom. Neither did the Pats when it counted.
BobbyG - reminds everyone that it's 18-1* ... not because of the video,
but because the Pats are the first 18-1 non-champion team in NFL history.

That is what the game ultimately came down to, stop the Giants with 2
minutes to go and the Pats win. But, and I think this is equally important,
the Giants had a shot to win this game because their defense played the
Patriots perfectly. In order to beat this version of the Patriots you have
to put Brady on his back. Early and often. As hard as possible. The
Giants did that.

Rattling Brady's cage caused him to make a lot of bad throws in this game.
We saw him miss more wide open receivers today than he did all season. The
ball was coming out of his hand earlier than he might have liked because he
got hit damned near every time he dropped back to pass. Pressure turns coal
into diamonds, but it turns QB's into jelly (with the odd exception here and
there).

Let me be the first to say, "Welcome back to the NFL Mr. Brady. Plan on
spending more time in the whirlpool and on the trainer's table next season."

Anyone notice this was the first time Brady broke a sweat this year? The
Super Bowl is not the place where you want to get your first real test. A
loss or two along the way might have done the Pats some good.

Terry, some more thoughts, wonder what your take is on this.

Yes, the Giant's pass rush rattled Brady, as it would anyone, and as
any hurricane force blitz rattles any QB.
But yes, on what should have been the winning NE touchdown drive, the
Pats started at somewhere less than there own 20
and moved it right down the field. Welker was unstoppable. Had the
Pats been able to rush Manning effectively as the Giants rushed Brady
the Pats would be unbeaten.

What I don't understand is the lack of any adjustment or planning by
the Pats for this defense.

No hurry up offense, which if you recall the Pats STARTED with in one
of their games. This would have had the Giants in oxgen masks had they
kept it up early and often.

Complete abandonment of the running game. Inexplicable in a game this
low scoring.

Nothing unexpected, like the 3 tight end formation they used two weeks
ago where even the announcers said "Wow, we haven't even seen this all
season from the Pats!".

It seems like I have always heard that you live and die by the blitz.
I can't understand how the Patriots could not have been prepared for
this, and had nothing to offer in the way of stopping it, or slowing
it down.

I do think they will be back with a vengeance next year. Unlike many
Dolphin fans, I was actually for the Pats tonight, I'm an AFC guy
through and through. Wink

Broke a sweat? Yes. And several members of the o-line looked the same.
Scared almost. That deer in the headlight look. I saw it all in Brady's
face- FINALLY- doubt. Brady is a weapon, so is the NE machine. But today
they made the record books for all the wrong reasons.
finsfan can't help but wonder--does BB wish he kept in the backup against
the "pathetic dolphins" and took his one loss at a more appropriate time?

Ah, don't mind me, I'm just disappointed. I did want the Pats to win.
I think they were remarkable this season and a joy to watch. Exciting
football like the Dan Fouts Chargers or Marino at his best years. I
was pulling for them, even as a Dolphin fan. I'm not crazy about their
coach, but the guys on the team seem like pretty nice guys and I am
bummed that they couldn't figure out how to stop a pass rush, after
winning 18 games straight.

I noticed that on the go-ahead Pats drive late in the game the Giants
stopped blitzing as much and rushed with their 4 down linemen. That played
into the Pats' strength. Give Brady time and he'll kill you. I wasn't
surprised at all to see New England score on that drive. It may have been
that the Giants D ran out of gas. It's hard to blitz on just about every
down for 4 quarters in that humidity.

>What I don't understand is the lack of any adjustment or planning by

You can bet that Belicheat prepared his offense to face a lot of blitzes.
I'm sure they knew that the Giants would sell out to get to Brady. It's
really the only way to beat them. The unfortunate thing for the Patriots is
they couldn't stop it. No amount of adjusting worked, if they didn't get
you with a DE, they bull rushed a DT up the middle with a LB right behind
him or a
DB off the edge. Brady knew the pressure was coming, he just didn't know
from which direction. Eli Manning got the Cadillac Escalade for game MVP,
but I would have given it to the entire front 7 of the Giants.

It's easy to second guess when a plan on offense or defense doesn't lead to
a victory. The Pats did manage to go ahead with 2 minutes left in the game.
They won several games this year in exactly the same way they nearly won
today. I was half expecting to see Harrison or Samuel grab an interception
on that last Giants drive. New England's D tends to over-play receivers and
jump routes in that situation and get a hand on the ball for a deflection or
interception. The Giants did some really nice things on offense in their
game winning drive, like over-loading the right side with 3 receivers and
running two on clear-out routes to the left leaving a receiver one-on-one in
the open field on the right. Easy completion, easy first down.

>It seems like I have always heard that you live and die by the blitz.

Pats knew the Giants would blitz a lot. And they sure as hell tried to stop
it. Most days they're quite good at it. But not today. We can't forget
that the Giants are a professional football team, too, that earned their way
to the championship game. Today the Giants lived by the blitz and the
Patriots died by it. You have no idea how much pleasure it gave me to type
the last 4 words in the previous sentence. Wink

If Miami's not involved, I just want to see good football. I could have
gotten behind New England except that their head coach is completely
unlikable. I wanted to see Belicheat lose more than I wanted to see any of
the players lose. It's hard to be against them when half of them are
ex-Dolphins. Wink Except for Rodney Harrison. I wanted to see him lose.
The game, and possibly a tooth or eyeball. He's a dirty bastard. Several
times today he made tackles by going after the ball carrier's helmet with
his forearm. He plays like that every game, and every game Belicheat
watches film and sees it. Which means
Belicheat encourages it. It was fun to watch the Giants out-physical the
Pats today. They got beat at their own game.

Blowing a perfect season in the Super Bowl is going to sting for a very long
time. They may come back with a vengeance next season, but they'll have to
figure out a lot of personnel situations before that time comes around.

Maybe they were overrated all along. They ran up the score a lot
against weak teams, although they did have a few big wins against
good teams. But after a 56-10 pasting of the Bills they eked out
narrow wins against the Eagles and Ravens who were not very
good. They did not dominate in their two playoff wins against
two teams they should have beaten easily if they were as good
as they were supposed to be.

And, San Diego's best player was sitting on the bench.

The Patriots held the Giants pretty much in check... but the Giants
more so of the Pats. Recall that this is the Pats offense that scored
at will, set all sorts of records, had all the weapons. To hold them
to two touchdowns was the key to victory. Period.

No, I don't think you win 18 games in today's NFL by being overrated.

And the Giant defense was not what one the game, though it is what
kept the Pats from scoring in the 20s or 30s.

Again, for anyone who watched the game, the Pats scored what should
have been the winning touchdown against this vaunted defense and were
ahead with 2 minutes to go. Pats defense stops the Giants, game is
over. They didn't.
