Which part of this did you miss:

John H. Cushman Jr.: "Mr. Lewis [who founded the Center for Public
Integrity] wrote to say that he had been trying his
best to avoid doing exactly that [the statements were
"lies"].

Of course, as could easily pertain to you and your insistence that these
statement were "lies", Mr. Lewis has this to say:

"...if someone, for whatever reasons, fervently, unquestioningly, believes
certain information and wants to believe it with unswerving, tunnel vision
certainty, so much so as to be willing to repeat it over and over again,
almost like a mantra, for months and months. Sissela Bok wrote in her classic
work 'Lying: Moral Choice in Public and Private Life' thirty years ago about
the phenomenon of clinging to false beliefs: 'The more dogmatic the belief
that one possesses truth, the greater the liberties taken on its behalf with
truth-telling!'"
