Is their special teams and defense incredible or what?

Amazing, to say the least. 3 blocked in total, two FG's, and an extra
point attempt as well, to win the game for Tampa; they almost ran it
back as well. Win or lose, my eyes are wide open. OT set to start.....NOW!

Can you run back a blocked PAT in the NFL?

I wish I could see the game. Gruden is probably fuming.

Yes, the Defense can. They almost did. Got tackled on at mid field after
a lateral. Saurbraun is attempting a 46 yarder. GOOD! Game over. 12-9,
Carolina. Break them out. They looked good on D. But time will tell. The
offense is, eh, and the QB position is like a revolving door. But they
are definitely a hard foe on your schedule if you have them.

The Defense can't return a blocked PAT. I've seen dozens of blocked PAT's and
never seen anybody trying to return them. Once the ball hits the ground it is
considered dead if it doesn't go thru the uprights.

I wish there was a rule on a two point conversion play that if the Defense
intercepts the ball or recovers a fumble on the play, the Defensive team should
get a point. It would add a little more risk to going for two, and force pass
defenders to try for the interception as opposed to just trying to knock the
ball on the ground.

Statistics from the rushing yardage, passing yardage, number of receptions etc
are not recorded on a two point play except for the two points. For example,
if Jerome Bettis scores on a two point conversion play, he does not have a run
for two yards added to his stats although he does get two points added to his
scoring totals.
In the pre-two point era, if there was a bobbled snap on a PAT and whoever on
the offensive team picked up the ball and scored, they would get credit for one
point although the rushing yards would not be added to their totals.

Then why was it returned to approximately mid-field then?

According to official rules, you can't. It's strange that the officials
allowed them to advance the ball to mid field. Swear to God this
happened.-drew

Because NFL players don't always remember the obscure rules,
especially when the adrenaline is flowing.

And the officials? What was their excuse?

They forgot to read the rule book?

Here it is, straight from nfl.com:

http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules/try

The defensive team never can score on a try. As soon as defense gets
possession or the kick is blocked or a touchdown is not scored, the
try is over.

This is nice of you but I already checked for myself. Having watched
football for 30 years it's embarrassing that I allowed the officials to
throw me off like that. They were just as guilty as the players of
forgetting the rule, as I saw everyone of the officials going along with
the attempted run back of the blocked PAT and they even marked the spot
where the play ended which was silly as well when you considered there
was no time left on the clock.

Eh, but it turned out to be nothing. Can you imagine if the Panthers
scored on that return and attempted backward lateral?-drew

You can, but it will only be for exercise, since you can't score.

I still want to know why they allowed the play to continue. There was no
whistle, no attempt to rule the play dead, and the announcers said
nothing. Very odd.

when you said the announcers said nothing, are you watching the actual
coverage? i saw the clip that they replayed and the announcers did say:
"..they run it back, just for fun..." or something to that effect.

The NCAA allows the defensive team to run back an interception or
fumble after a 2 point conversion. If the defensive team makes it to
the other end zone, they get two points. I'd love to see that in the
NFL.

And yeah that must have been a helluva defensive game in TB yesterday.

Recall Thanksgiving Day, I don't remember the year, Dallas vs. Miami.
PAT was blocked but who was the Dallas player that touched the ball and
allowed Miami to score? Don't recall all the details but that was the
year every player in the league leanred that rule.
