Just wondering why all the outdoor stadiums venues in the CFL (Edmonton,
Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal) are "decked sideline" type
stadiums and not "bowl confguration" stadiums like one would find south of
the Canadian border?
I suppose Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium has a bit of a bowl type
configuration....well, not quite, but almost there, at least at one end.
Using Winnipeg as an example, double decks on each side the length of the
field, and then a half assed attempt at end zone seating at the north end
zone, and temporary bleachers brought in for the south end zone during the
odd Grey Cup event.
Would not a decently designed bowl type configuration be much better for
an outdoor venue (cutting down on the wind drafts and side winds and what
not) ? Not to mention one would not have to build as physically high,
especially for a CFL city, where the average seating capacity is 20,000 to
25,000 seats.
With the exception of Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, all the other
outdoor CFL stadiums look so bush league, it's laughable.

Welcome to small market football league.
Stadiums are the least concern I have. Good athletes, properly paid
athletes, fair rules, no cheating, good refs, affordable tickets and
sustainable and marketable teams are all more important than Stadium
configurations.
Alot of those stadiums in the USA are paid for or subsidized in more than
one way by tax dollars. I don't want MY Canadian cities doing that. My
Tax dollars are to pay for schools and hospitals and police and safe
bridges. Not flashy stadiums. |

I think because the CFL field is bigger, more seats in "the corners" and
the end zones are less desirable because you can't see much of the
action. Better to sit on the sidelines, even if you're way up.
I think it's less of an issue in the NFL, where in a bowl shaped stadium
you're still pretty close to all of the action, even when you're sitting
in the corners and end zones.

Why, consider when they were built. Take Canad Inns Stadium for
instance, it first opened in 1954 and then with 18-19,000 seats. In
the late 60's to the mid 70's the upper decks were built. At one time
its capacity was about 33,000 and now it's around 29,500.

Built in time for the 1978 Commonwealth games.

I think the end zone seats were part of the original plan.
