Whichever team the ESPN crew is cheering
for at any particular moment, be it the Colts
-or- Patriots, ESPN has decided that the NFC
is practically certain to lose the Super Bowl,
no matter what.

Oh well, not to forget, one is reminded that
similar opinions were expressed regarding the
chances of the AFL back when Joe Namath
was around. And, every last opinion expressed
regarding the way in which the then-NFL Colts
were going to dominate the AFL opponent in
that Super Bowl were absolutely and totally

as could be, every last one.

So, keep that in mind when you read the follow-

Who's the best of the inferior NFC bunch?

Updated: October 25, 2007

It's not yet November and the 42nd Super Bowl
is all but over for the NFC.

The AFC has won the last four NFL titles, six
of the last seven and eight of the last 10. The
margin was a field goal in three of the five most
recent NFC defeats. But perennial AFC powers
New England and Indianapolis are so dramatic-
ally superior this season that one of them almost
certainly will win it all in Arizona come February.

Less certain, for now, is which NFC team stands
the best chance at joining Chicago, Seattle, Phila-
delphia and Carolina as the conference's most
recent Super Bowl losers.

Any list begins with Dallas and the resurgent New
York Giants. We break down the favorites and 10
others -- a faker's dozen if there ever was one.

Note: The teams are listed in the order of how
well they might do in the playoffs, independent
of current power-ranking status.

The problem with your analogy is no one knew how good the AFL was back
then. Now everyone knows that the AFC is clearly the superior
conference, just as the NFC was several years ago when the 49ers and
Cowboys were dominating.

Go ahead and put down a bunch of money on the NFC rep wherever you like
to bet, and get back to me in February.

There was no common schedule back then, and the NFL had kicked AFL butt
in the previous Super Bowls.

Now there is a common schedule it is much easier to judge the relative
level of the teams. After NE wiped the field with the 'boys in Texas
Stadium it is hard to make a case for the NFC winning the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys got off to a no score 14-0
deficit, then outscored the Pats by 24-7 to
lead 24-21 in the 3rd quarter, and then
faltered. I wouldn't be overly confident
that that 24-7 dominance by the Cowboys
(something many commentators missed)
will not be repeated over a longer period
(or is not indicative that the Cowboys are
a lot closer to the Pats than many pundits
think) were there to be a rematch.

Oh, and by the way, it's not uncommon
for a team to lose its first game against
an opponent -and- come back to win
the second.

Also, the Cowboys expect -3- key play-
ers to join the team that weren't avail-
able for the Pats game -- Terry Glenn,
their fastest receiver, starter, Tank
Johnson, former starting DT for the
defensive stalwart Chicago Bears,
and Anthony Henry, starting corner.
