Of course, what matters is wins, and the
Patriots are tops in that category. Even
though the Cowboys, Colts, and Packers
have identical 7-1 records, the Colts are
considered, by most, to be the closest to
the Patriots, and their recent near-win
did nothing to diminish that perception.
Just for fun, for whatever it's worth, here's
a statistical comparison of the 6 teams
considered to be most likely to be vying
for a Conference Championship and for
an NFL Championship.
This comparison is based solely on the
most commonly referenced stats, and the
sum total result = team rankings in each
category divided by total categories (30).
To no one's surprise, the Patriots are tops,
-but- surprisingly, the Steelers rank #2.
1. Patriots, 1+1+1+4+5+1+1+1+2+2+1+3+1+ (wins/offense)
3+2+3+5+3+4+4+4+3+3+2+5+ (defense)
2+1+3+1+1 (net turnovers/special teams)
= 73/30 = 2.433
2. Steelers, 5+4+5+1+3+5+3+2+6+3+2+1+2+ (wins/offense)
1+1+1+3+1+2+1+2+6+1+5+1+ (defense)

3. Colts, 2+3+3+3+4+4+4+3+1+1+4+2+5+ (wins/offense)
