It’s been a while since I’ve trolled in here, but I wanted
to see the thoughts of Raven fan after that game.
Here are my comments for what they are worth.
1. I was pleasantly surprised the game went so well for the Steelers.
I expect a close game and half expected a Raven win. Perhaps Cowher
has finally got his head out of his butt on some of his flaws, such as
never having the team ready to play week 1. The Steelers were in fact
very ready for week one. When I read that teammates were so fired up
about Porter not being out there and them wanting to play well in his
absence I realized that this team was ready.
2. What happened to Balt.’s OL? I expected them to be very good
this season, with Odgen being his dominant self, a pretty strong
interior and the addition of Zuess. I just assumed Brown was going to
add to that line. Did he make it to the starting line up? Is Odgen up
to his normal self? I really don’t know; I’m just asking.
3. I figured Maddox would actually be better than he was last year,
considering he entered camp as the starter and had all the reps. I
think Reimersmer just makes them that much more dangerous as well. How
can any football fan not like Hines Ward?
4. I just got to ask: Don’t most Raven fans cringe when they
hear some of the players say things like “I don’t respect
them at all” when referring to a team that clearly outplayed and
dominated them? I mean, even if I were a fan, that would bum me out,
like when Kordell would open his stink hole and make himself look
idiotic.
5. I can’t help to wonder why Billick starts a true rookie week
1. I think Boller might be very good some day, but week 1, Redman had
to have given them a better chance to win, and according to the team,
this is NOT a rebuilding year, so why not start your best players?
Have a good season, just not when you play Pgh. Why didn’t
they send Suggs in for often? I didn’t understand that. He is
gonna be sick.

The only difference in the OL from last year is Brown, who hadn't played in
three years and who stunk the two years he did play before he got hurt.
Ogden is fine, a hall of famer for sure. It's the rest of the line that's a
problem. That said, I don't think they did that poorly Week 1. Jamal
gained 4.6 YPC and though Boller was hit a few times, he generally had time
to throw.

Ward is an outstanding talent and also a punk and cheap shot artist, the
kind you love if he's on your team and love to hate if he's on another.
Sort of like Romanowski.

Yes, we cringe. Some guys just don't understand the meaning of Shut up and
Play. Of course, many of the Steelers have the same problem, but no one
considers it a problem when you're winning.

Billick is looking long-term. He views Redman's ceiling as much lower than
Boller's. Time will tell...

Suggs reported to training camp out of shape and had a horrible preseason.
He was blocked easily by 2nd and 3rd string lineman in every preseason game.
The coaches decided to put on hold his transition to LB, and he's now too
light to play DE full time. He will come in only on obvious passing downs.
Did you know Suggs is only 20 years old and was the youngest player drafted?
Looks like he just needs more time to mature than the average first rounder.
Well, at least that's what we hope.

In one of the articles I had read about Brown in the off-season, the author
described him as something like "a road-grading run blocker and average pass
blocker" if my memory is correct. So I have a couple questions: Brown
isn't actually starting yet, is he? I don't what level of conditioning
he's at or how well he's worked with the first team but I really didn't
think he started Sunday. That would be consistent with his role late in
pre-season, he wasn't starting. I also didn't think that the O-line did
poorly on Sunday. Jamal did rush for 69 yds on 15 carries. True, the
Steelers are reputedly hard to run on but I'll take Jamal and his 4.6 ypc
and see what develops. 15 carries wasn't nearly enough. Boller threw 43
times and was able to avoid the Steelers pass rush pretty well I thought.
The Steelers certainly are a more talented team but we played really dumb.
It's hard to really evaluate how good or bad you are when that happens.

Agreed! Hey, it's not a penalty if you can get away with it.

Exactly!

With the game plan our Offensive and Defensive coaches called Sunday, Redman
wouldn't have done any better. Boller was only a small piece of the problem
Sunday. It was a combination of a really pitiful Offensive
scheme -(something we've come to expect out of Cavanaugh), very little
blitzing in a 3-4 scheme, soft coverage by the secondary and most
importantly Jamal only getting 15 carries.

Not sure what to think about Suggs but I think it's odd that coming into the
season, everyone thought he'd be on the field and Boller on the bench. He
certainly does have a tremendous upside, I guess the challenge is getting
him to a point where he's not hurting the team when he's on the field.
Once he starts hitting his stride, it ought to be fun to watch.

I don't remember where I read that but it sounds familiar to me too.
Unfortunately, I think calling Brown an "average pass blocker" is pretty
generous, based on his last few years. He was a very poor pass blocker the
way I remember it, but supposedly he has actually improved his footwork and
agility during his three years off ( according to the coaching staff).

Brown didn't play at all in at least two preseason games due to a knee
injury. He didn't start the Steelers game but played a lot. He'll probably
not start the Browns game either, but if he plays well he'll be starting
soon. He didn't play much during the preseason because of the sore knee,
and let's face facts, he hasn't played in years, so it's probably wise to
bring him slowly.

Yeah, I think you're right about that. The Ravens will likely play much
better next time around with the Steelers, in the last regualar season game
( sheesh, they'd better).
